"It's a peace sign, combined with a tree - my little peace tree - and there's a long story behind it. When I was a student, I used to climb a tree in our yard, and it was my secret, my peaceful place, where I started writing. When I was a little older, I moved to Ann Arbor, got into Eastern philosophy, and I read a Herman Hesse essay about trees, and how they grow in two directions at once - so I tied it all together."
